A Brief History of Books

Books have been around for thousands of years, so that means they have a lot of history behind them. A book is actually a medium for storing information in the form of text or pictures, usually written in only a single page, often bound together and covered with a durable cover. The technical term for these physical arrangements is codex. This is a very fragile medium because books have to withstand damage by water, moisture, heat, etc.

A book can be used for any number of things like document storage, studying, for writing letters and reports, as a collecting point for books (in case someone wants to pass down the history of a certain era), etc. Even if you have no idea what a book is used for, you probably know someone who’s lost a book and would like to find it again. So don’t worry, all you have to do is look around your house and you’ll likely find at least one book stored there!

Most people keep a few books around the house for sentimental reasons, such as my mother’s wedding album, a copy of her graduate thesis (which are still in great shape despite its age), and the children’s book she still has in binders. Some people keep several books in various binders or stacks in their office. If you’re not sure what books to get, you can go to a local bookstore or even an online book store and see what they recommend. However, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Even professional book experts may not know which books are best to choose, so it’s good to rely on someone else’s opinion.
